Periodically, usually in the late afternoon, the IDE responds painfully slowly and the status icon near the app title is constantly spinning. It just happens while typing code that, for example, one types a word or some letters and it only appears on the screen after 20 seconds. This happens in both the client code and the server code. Very annoying, impossible to continue working like this. Restarting helps for a very short time (30 seconds), then it’s the same again. My internet connection is very strong and I tested on different computers, no difference, always very slow synchronisation. This has been the case for about three weeks. Is there an overload on the server I am linked to (Belgium)?
Can somebody check this problem?
I’ve always heavily promoted Anvil everywhere I could, but this is really unacceptable.
For this very poorly functioning Anvil server, it is a shame to continuously lose time and thus actually throw away unnecessary subscription money. This is unacceptable, that no one from the staff responds to my question.
Not staff, but just to acknowledge you, that sounds incredibly frustrating. (That said, I think a guaranteed response time from staff requires a support contract.) Here’s my amateur attempt to help, for what it’s worth.
It’s helpful to report now that you have tried not only different browser instances but different computers.
The fact that no one else is seeing your post and responding “Me too” suggests that it is an isolated problem. As far as I understand, though, Anvil’s servers are in England for everyone (excepting Enterprise plans), so it’s hard to imagine it being specific to your region around Belgium.
You said it’s usually in the late afternoon. How long does the issue last?
You say your internet connection is strong. Have you measured the internet speed during the time you’re experiencing the issue? I’m wondering if someone else on your ISP is eating up all the bandwidth at that particular time, for some reason.
Hi @kempynck.jan,
This part looks particularly suspicious to me:
The feedback between typing and appearing on the screen does not depend on the server; something is slowing the Anvil Editor in your browser to a crawl. My initial suspicion (same as @hugetim’s) would have been your browser, but if this is happening on multiple computers when you try it and others aren’t reporting the same experience, it leads me to suspect that something specific about your app is slowing the Editor right down.
To confirm, can you check:
- Does this happen with other apps, or just the main app you’re editing?
- If (as I suspect) it’s just this application, can you go back and try editing some older versions of your app, from before the problem started? Given that it apparently started quite abruptly, I suspect you will find a change about three weeks ago that triggered the problem. If you can work out what it is, that helps narrow down the problem (and might give you a path to a workaround!)
Thank you for your response. First of all I have a payed personal plan.
Indeed I measured the internet speed during this slow down period and it was always above 200 Mbps. Even direct connection, no WiFi, did not make a difference.
All other on line software, for example 3D CAD “Onshape” still works fine during that same period.
I am not sure that my server is in England, because when I did tests with a Pico some time ago, and I wanted the server to do periodically background jobs, I found that the server that I was connected to, was in Evere near Brussels. So maybe that can be a reason that my problem is an isolated problem, because I think there are not many Belgians using Anvil, I don’t know.
So the problem is that when I change/type something in the program Client or Server side, the activity icon starts to spin and only after a certain time it is synchronised and the icon change to a green check mark. As long as the icon is spinning, I can type, but nothing happens.
Thank you for your response.
When it slows down, it doesn’t matter in what app I am editing (older of newer).
Most of the time when it happens it is while I am editing, but sometimes it occurs also when executing the app. For example I have a text box to enter a search word, when Anvil works normal, I found a word in a database in 3 seconds, and when I am in the slow down period, It exceeds 30 seconds and server is time-out.
All the computers (Apple, Chromebox,…),that I use have at least an i5 or i7 processor and 16GB ram, I don’t buy or use anything else.
I must say I don’t use GitHub for my Anvil projects yet, but I see a big activity in the monitor. Can that be the reason, and if so, can I disable it to test it?
I will certainly do some more tests and will try to give your the most possible info that I can, so that you are able to find the problem. I come back as soon as I have something new. Sorry for being a bit hard, but it is frustrating to do more than 1 minute, to just type 1 line of code.
