Custom CSS and Role

What I’m trying to do:
I want to write my own custom CSS for my application to display the colors and look I am trying to get. I want to understand to get each item and change colors, texts, etc… I am struggling with identifying the buttons/navigation links, etc… I am looking for tutorial or some visual way to identify each element so i can go into css and change the properties.

I am using the Material 3 Template. I tried to change the roles and it changes wrong elements or nothing on display.
