I know to some degree components can be programmatically animated, but I’d like to see some native support for animations.

There is indeed no Native support for it on Anvil. However, you can apply CSS roles to your components for animation.
If you are not much familiar with css, you can find lots of beautiful animations on sites like Codepen. Just paste the css in your role to get started.
