You can, in fact, Ctrl+Click to select multiple components 
As David says, it’s Ctrl+C to copy, Ctrl+V to paste, Ctrl+X to cut. (That’s on PC - I believe it’s the Apple key on a Mac.)
(Perhaps you were confused by the Dashboard template, because all the main page content is inside one big ColumnPanel - so if you miss the component you’re aiming for, you will sometimes select that instead. It does work if you click in the right place, though!)
